Shopping List from a Recipe: Merge Ingredients Fast (2026)
Turn any saved recipe into a shopping list in one tap. See how ingredients get merged across recipes, quantities scaled, and what to fix by hand before you shop.
Making a shopping list from a recipe sounds trivial until you do it for three recipes at once. Flour appears in two of them. One uses grams and another uses cups. Half the ingredients you already own, and you can't remember which half.
Most people solve this with a notes app and a lot of copying. This guide shows a faster way: one tap per recipe, with ingredients merged where it makes sense. It also covers the cases where merging deliberately does not happen, so nothing surprises you at the store.
From recipe to list in one tap
In ChefExtract, a saved recipe has an Add to shopping list button under its ingredients. Tap it and every ingredient lands in your list, with a short confirmation telling you how many items were added. A shortcut then takes you straight to the list.
The shopping list belongs to your account, so you need to be signed in to use it. That also means it is the same list on every device where you sign in.
The same button works for recipes you extracted from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, a web page or a photo. Where the recipe came from does not matter once it is saved.
How ingredients get merged
You aren't limited to one recipe. Add as many different recipes as you like, one after another: they all go into the same single shopping list, and any ingredient that appears in more than one recipe is added up into one line instead of being repeated.
When you add a second recipe, the app compares each new ingredient with what is already on the list. If it finds the same ingredient, it combines them instead of creating a duplicate line.
- Same unit family adds up. 200 g of flour plus 300 g becomes 500 g. 500 g plus 1 kg becomes 1.5 kg. Milliliters, centiliters and liters combine too.
- Spoons and cups add up. Teaspoons, tablespoons and cups of the same ingredient are summed.
- Counts add up. 3 eggs plus 2 eggs becomes 5 eggs.
It also understands decimal commas, so "1,5 kg" is read as one and a half kilos.
What does not get merged (on purpose)
Some combinations can't be added without guessing, so the app keeps both amounts on one line, joined with a plus sign:
- Weight and volume. 200 g of flour and 1 cup of flour depend on how the flour is packed. You see "200 g + 1 cup".
- Metric and imperial. Grams and ounces are not mixed.
That is a feature, not a bug: you see exactly what each recipe asks for and can decide what to buy. Tap the line and edit it if you want a single number.
Scale the recipe before you add it
A recipe written for four does not help when you are cooking for two. Use the servings controls on the recipe, then add it to the list. The quantities that go to the list are the scaled ones, so you buy the right amount and waste less.
A worked example: three dinners, one list
Say you plan three dinners:
| Recipe | What it needs |
|---|---|
| Tomato pasta | 400 g pasta, 2 onions, 500 g tomatoes |
| Lentil soup | 1 onion, 300 g lentils, 500 g tomatoes |
| Chicken tray bake | 1 kg chicken, 2 onions |
Add all three and the list shows 5 onions and 1 kg tomatoes on single lines, plus the pasta, lentils and chicken. Without merging, you would have read seven lines and added them up in your head in the aisle.
Check off, edit and add your own items
The list is built for the store, not just for planning:
- Tick items off as you go. Checked items move out of the way, and you can clear them in one action.
- Edit any line. Tap it to rename an item or change a quantity. Long names wrap.
- Add your own items. Coffee, bin bags, whatever. Items you type by hand are never merged. Tapping add always creates a new row.
Before you leave the house, scan the list once and delete what you already have. Olive oil, salt and rice usually go first.
Where to go from here
If you are new to this, start with one recipe you will cook this week and send it to the list. Once that feels natural, plan the whole week at once. The longer walkthrough on meal planning is in our guide to creating a grocery shopping list from a recipe, and the foundation for all of it is a tidy collection, covered in how to build a digital recipe cookbook.
Don't have the recipe in the app yet? Start with saving a recipe from a YouTube video or from an image, then send it to your list.
